A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, comfortable HIFU session — and it starts in the days beforehand, not on the day itself. The good news is that prepping is simple: keep your skin well hydrated, be gentle with it, and skip anything that might leave it sensitive. Here’s exactly what to do in the lead-up to your appointment at our Birtinya studio on the Sunshine Coast.

THE SHORT VERSION
In the week before HIFU, hydrate well inside and out, keep to a gentle cleansing and moisturising routine, and ease off strong actives like retinol and acids for a few days. Arrive with clean, product-free, sunburn-free skin, and let your skin therapist know your health history. That’s really all it takes.

Why prepping your skin before HIFU matters

HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is a non-surgical way to lift and firm the skin, with little to no downtime. Starting from a calm, well-hydrated baseline simply makes the session more comfortable and means your skin feels its best on the day. None of the steps below are complicated — think of them as a gentle wind-down for your skin rather than a strict regimen.

How to prepare for HIFU: the week before

Give yourself about a week. That’s plenty of time to get your skin into great condition without overhauling anything.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink plenty of water and keep skin moisturised morning and night. A hydrating mist and a nourishing skin serum are an easy way to keep moisture topped up.

2. Keep your routine gentle and consistent. Cleanse morning and night with a soft, non-stripping cleanser so skin stays balanced.

3. Exfoliate mid-week, not last minute. A gentle exfoliating scrub two to three days out helps lift away dull, dead skin cells. Skip exfoliating on the day of your session.

4. Treat your skin to a mask. A hydrating face mask a few days beforehand is a lovely comfort boost that leaves skin soft and supple.

5. Press pause on strong actives. Ease off retinol, high-strength vitamin C, and exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic) for three to five days before, so your skin isn’t sensitised going in.

6. Mind the sun. Avoid sunburn and heavy tanning, and wear SPF daily. Turning up with sunburnt skin usually means rescheduling.

The day of your HIFU session

Arrive with a fresh, makeup-free face if you can – a quick cleanse before you leave home is ideal. Skip heavy oils or serums that morning, have a good drink of water, and eat something beforehand so you’re relaxed and comfortable. Coming straight from work? No stress – we can help you cleanse when you arrive.

What to avoid before HIFU

  • Sunburnt, broken, or irritated skin over the area
  • Strong exfoliating acids or retinol in the three to five days prior
  • Fake tan on the area you’re having done
  • Booking over a day when the skin is actively breaking out & rescheduling is completely fine

Let us know your health history

Before your first session we’ll have a quick, friendly chat about your skin and your health history so we can tailor everything to you. It helps to think this through beforehand – for example, mention any recent cosmetic injectables in the area, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, so your skin therapist can advise on the right timing for you.

A simple pre-HIFU skincare routine

If you’d like a ready-made routine for the week before, keep it clean and hydrating: Cleanse It morning and night, a Skin Serum and Hydrate It to lock in moisture, a mid-week Scrub It, and a Mask It a few days out. It’s the same gentle, hydrating routine that’s lovely for your skin any time – you can find the full range in our skincare shop.

Frequently asked questions

How should I prepare my skin for HIFU?

Keep your skin well hydrated in the week beforehand, stick to a gentle cleansing and moisturising routine, and pause strong actives such as retinol and exfoliating acids for a few days. Arrive with clean, makeup-free, sunburn-free skin.

Can I wear makeup to my HIFU session?

It’s best to arrive makeup-free so your skin is clean and ready. If you can’t, don’t worry – we can help you cleanse when you arrive.

Should I exfoliate before HIFU?

A gentle exfoliation two to three days before is great for lifting away dull skin. Avoid exfoliating on the day itself, as freshly scrubbed skin can be more sensitive.

Can I use retinol before HIFU?

Ease off retinol and other strong actives for about three to five days beforehand so your skin isn’t sensitised. You can gently reintroduce them once your skin feels comfortable afterwards.

How far in advance should I start prepping for HIFU?

About a week is plenty. That gives you time to hydrate, do a mid-week exfoliation and mask, and taper off strong actives before your session.
